چکیده

Narrow-angle astrometry with long-baseline infrared interferometers can provide extremely Klgh accuracies as required for indirect planet detection. Narrow-angle astrometric interferom~ try exploits the propertim of atmospheric turbulence over fieldn smaller than the interferometer bmeline divided by the atmospheric scale height. For such fields, wcuracy is linear with star separation, and nearly inversely proportional to baseline length. To exploit these properties, the interferometer observes a relatively bright (<13 ma~ ) target in the near infrared at 2.2 pm, and uses phase referencing to find a reference star withh the 2.2 pm iaoplanatic patch. With this technique faint references can be found for most targets. With bwdinea >100 m, whkh also minimize photon-noise errors, and with careful control of systematic errom by ueing laaer metrology, accuracies of tens of microarcaecon&/ = should be possible.

Detection Limits from the Mcdonald Observatory Planet Search Program

Based on the long-term radial-velocity surveys carried out with the McDonald Observatory 2.7m Harlan J. Smith Telescope from 1988 to the present, we derive upper limits to long-period giant planet companions for 31 nearby stars. Data from three phases of the McDonald Observatory 2.7m planet-search program have been merged together and for 17 objects, data from the pioneering CanadaFrance-Hawaii...

Nulling interferometry: performance comparison between space and ground-based sites for exozodiacal disc detection

Context. Characterising the circumstellar dust around nearby main sequence stars is a necessary step in understanding the planetary formation process and is crucial for future life-finding space missions such as ESA’s Darwin or NASA’s Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF). Besides paving the technological way to Darwin/TPF, the space-based infrared interferometers Pegase and FKSI (FourierKelvin Stell...

Performance study of ground-based infrared Bracewell interferometers Application to the detection of exozodiacal dust disks with GENIE

Nulling interferometry, a powerful technique for high-resolution imaging of the close neighbourhood of bright astrophysical objets, is currently considered for future space missions such as Darwin or the Terrestrial Planet Finder Interferometer (TPF-I), both aiming at Earth-like planet detection and characterization. Ground-based nulling interferometers are being studied for both technology dem...

Interferometric Detection of Planets/Gaps in Protoplanetary Disks

We investigate the possibility to find evidence for planets in circumstellar disks by infrared and submillimeter interferometry. Hydrodynamical simulations of a circumstellar disk around a solar-type star with an embedded planet of 1 Jupiter mass are presented. On the basis of 3D radiative transfer simulations, images of this system are calculated. These intensity maps provide the basis for the...

Polarimetric Sar Interferometry (pol-insar) for Global Forest Biomass Monitoring

A central parameter to the terrestrial carbon budget is forest biomass which represents a proxy for carbon. Despite its crucial role in the terrestrial carbon budget, forest biomass is poorly quantified across most parts of the planet due to the great difficulties in measuring biomass on the ground and consistently aggregating measurements across scales. Today’s information is largely based on ...
